RULES AND REGULATIONS OF STAYING IN THE RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE

REGISTRATION PERIOD: MAY 20 TO JUNE 20, 2025

Greetings from the Department of Portuguese!

We are pleased to inform you that the 39th Portuguese Language Summer Programme will be held from July 10 to 30, 2025 at the University of Macau Campus.

Interested students with age 15 or above are welcome to register!

PAYMENT AND REGISTRATION

Please follow the steps for completing the registration: (REGISTRATION LINKS WILL BE AVAILABLE AT 10am ON MAY 20, 2025)

  1. Make on-line payment through the payment system.
  2. Provide basic personal information and select a course level through the registration link.

Student must complete the above 2 steps in order for a successful registration.

IMPORTANT:

  1. The tuition fee is not subject to be reimbursed if the student decides to cancel his/her application for the Portuguese Language Summer Programme. Please make sure you can join the programme before paying the tuition fee.
  2. Non-local students must take care of the necessary visa applications, the programme will not be responsible for any visa application.
  3. Successful applicant will be issued an admission letter for visa application purpose (if applicable).
  4. Please note that the level selected is not binding. The University of Macau reserves the right to assign students to a more appropriate level based on the documents provided and their proficiency demonstrated during the course.

Upon successful completion of the registration and payment confirmation, participants will receive a confirmation letter.

LANGUAGE COURSES

Levels: Basic, Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced (please make sure to read below the guide to level selection).

Number of hours: 45 (for Intermediate and Advanced courses) and 60 (for Basic, Elementary and Lower Intermediate courses). Students may also benefit from guided autonomous study.

Language courses include Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing as well as Intercultural Mediation activities.

Students will have access to free textbooks and other supplementary resources.

GUIDE TO LEVEL SELECTION

Beginner (Zero–A1): For applicants with 0 to 6 months of study.
Designed for complete beginners or those just starting Portuguese, this course focuses on basic greetings and introductions, exchanging personal information, discussing origins, family, daily routines, and preferences, and participating in simple interactions in everyday settings such as cafés or restaurants.

Elementary (A2): For applicants with 6 months to around 1 year of study.
At this level, you can manage simple, routine interactions and discuss familiar topics. The syllabus covers planning activities, giving directions, describing daily life, housing, shopping, travel, recounting past experiences, describing people, giving advice, and expressing preferences and feelings in everyday situations.

Intermediate (B1–B2): For applicants with at least 1 to 2 years of study.
At the intermediate stage, you can handle most situations in daily life and engage in conversations on a range of familiar subjects. The course covers Portuguese for work, leisure, food, travel, culture, language, multicultural issues, and social relationships, enabling you to express opinions, compare experiences, and understand main ideas.

Advanced (B2–C1): For applicants with at least 2 or more years of study.
At the advanced level, you are capable of fluent and spontaneous communication on a broad range of topics, including abstract and complex matters. The course encourages engagement with advanced texts, in-depth discussions on social, academic, and cultural issues, critical analysis, debating viewpoints, and the flexible use of Portuguese for both personal and professional purposes.

PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS

For the Beginner and Elementary levels, no prior proof of language level is required. An in-person assessment will be conducted as part of the class activities on the first day of the programme.

For the Intermediate and Advanced levels, students must present a CAPLE certificate (minimum B1-DEPLE for Intermediate and B2-DIPLE for Advanced) or a university transcript as evidence of their proficiency and language learning experience.

Please note that the level selected is not binding. The University of Macau reserves the right to assign students to a more appropriate level based on the documents provided and their proficiency demonstrated during the course.

COURSES and CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

In the morning, students will participate in language and theme-based workshops, which will run from 8:45 a.m. to 1pm. These courses may be supplemented by other activities to be held in the afternoon.

Morning courses will be on literature, history, international relations, translation, economy and other topics on contemporary Portuguese-speaking countries. These courses will be open to all students attending Intermediate and Advanced language courses.

In the afternoon, students may engage in self-study or join any cultural activity organized by the Department of Portuguese or any other organization in Macau.

Clubs will take place during the afternoon or evening.

Evening clubs will develop your knowledge in topics like music, dance, poetry, gastronomy, Macanese culture, and prepare you for the Summer Programme last event. Embrace this unique opportunity to show your talents!

All courses aim at helping participants to develop their linguistic, sociolinguistic, pragmatic and sociocultural knowledge in Portuguese as well as to raise their intercultural awareness.

Other resources on gastronomy, Macao culture, linguistics, music and dance will also be made available on Moodle.

FEES

For local students or students attending a Macao university: MOP3,000

  • it includes textbooks and course materials

For all other students: MOP7,000

  • it includes textbooks and course materials
  • it includes accommodation in shared room (1 set of beddings is provided)
  • food vouchers on MOP1,000 for Next Kitchen 

Both fees include free resources for all courses and cultural activities.

TEACHERS

Teachers are well known professionals in their academic areas.

 CERTIFICATES 

The Summer Programme Certificate requires passing the assessment and attendance of at least 80% of scheduled language and theme based classes.
