Have you ever attended a traditional British tea party or explored British tea culture? A unique experience was offered to students by the English Co-Curricular Activities Committee (ECAC) in their second workshop of the semester. This session, held on October 23rd, was titled “British Afternoon Tea” and was led by our ELC instructors Ms. Joan Leong, Ms. Teresa Lam, and Ms. Azita Kuok. It turned out to be a delightful and enriching experience for all who attended.

Before the workshop began, the instructors meticulously prepared teapots, 3-tiered trays, cakes, tea, milk, and sugar, arranging the tables to resemble a classic British tea party setting. At the start of the workshop, the students were divided into six groups, each seated at a different table. Ms. Joan Leong then invited everyone to participate in a fun trivia game, which tested their knowledge of British afternoon tea culture. Questions like, “Who introduced afternoon tea to Britain?” and “What’s the proper way to stir your tea to avoid splashing?” kept the participants engaged and curious.

Following the game, Ms. Leong shared an informative video about British tea customs. After watching the video, the students participated in another round of game quiz, and those who answered correctly were rewarded with prizes, adding to the cheerful atmosphere. The smiles on everyone’s faces made it clear that they were enjoying the event.

Later in the workshop, the instructors demonstrated the art of arranging refreshments on the traditional trays and the proper method for brewing British tea. After that, students collaboratively put together their group’s 3-tiered trays and brewed tea, which were presented to the judges, Ms Sarah Zhou and Mr Mark Wong.  Their respective group’s presentations were given feedback and 2 groups were declared winners, who received some prizes.  The experience provided students with interactive and team social skills, as well as gained knowledge of the British Afternoon Tea culture.  The workshop was attended by close to 70 students from various faculties and majors.
