The English Co-Curricular Activities Committee (ECAC) hosted a vibrant and engaging workshop titled “Rice, the Heart of Traditions” on 21 January 2026, led by ELC Senior Instructor Mr. Mark Wong. The session celebrated rice as a simple yet remarkable grain that brings cultures together across the globe.

The workshop unfolded in five lively parts. Mr. Wong began by introducing well-known sayings featuring the word rice in different languages, encouraging students to share similar expressions from their own cultural backgrounds. Students then enjoyed a video exploring various types of rice, the unique ways they are served in different cuisines, and how rice plays a part in cultural celebrations worldwide. This was followed by an energetic online quiz, where students teamed up to test their knowledge. Afterwards, participants examined idioms from multiple cultures and discussed their interpretations, sparking fun and meaningful cross-cultural exchanges.

The event wrapped up on a delicious note, as students sampled an assortment of rice-based snacks enjoyed around the world, perfectly capturing the spirit of cultural appreciation and shared traditions.

The workshop was attended by students of both undergraduate and postgraduate levels from different faculties.
