The English Language Centre (ELC) successfully organised the Effective Reading Workshop on 8th March, 2019 at the University of Macau. In this workshop, students were introduced to the topic of modern slavery with strategies of academic reading such as analysis of text structure, different types of sentence functions, and inference skills for reading.

Following the introduction of reading strategies, students were able to infer the main idea of an article from the given context. They were also given different exercises to improve reading speed and comprehension.

In brief, the workshop effectively delivered academic reading techniques to UM students, who were very active and engaged in class discussion. In the future, the ELC will continue to organise more educational and fun events to improve students’ English proficiency.
