Abstract:
Much of the pre-Qin Chinese philosophy during the Spring-Autumn and Warring States period can be understood in the light of issues related to harmony as a solution to a chaotic world. Harmony takes place mainly in two forms, active and passive harmony. Active harmony is a state or process in which involved parties dynamically engage one another in a constructive way while maintaining a good level of equity. Passive harmony is merely the absence of discord or conflict, without active engagement. Disharmony is characterized by confrontation, conflict, and chaos. Domination exists with order, even though with an oppressive one. Domination may be disguised as, but must be distinguished from, harmony. While clarifying these concepts, I will also discuss their relation to freedom.
