Representatives from 4 local secondary schools attended the event
To further enhance the collaboration and communication between the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) at the University of Macau and local secondary schools, and to introduce the disciplines offered by the Faculty, FAH hosted an event with local secondary schools on 29th May 2024, inviting representatives from several schools to attend.
The event commenced with an academic talk titled ‘Talking Creatures We Are: Why Studying Languages Will Always be Important’ delivered by Professor João Veloso, Head of the Portuguese Department. He began the talk by posing the question, “What makes us humans?”, and used various approaches to introduce the concept of language. He stressed that language is the most powerful tool that enables effective communication and highlighted the advantages and opportunities that come with learning multiple languages, supported with numerous engaging examples. Following this, Professor Victoria Lei, Assistant Dean of FAH, led a discussion on the talk and addressed several challenging topics that educators should focus on, such as Artificial Intelligence and learning motivation.
Representatives from the International School of Macao, Pui Ching Middle School Macau, Escola Secundária Ilha Verde da Associação Comercial de Macau, Macau Anglican College attended the academic talk, discussion forum and dinner.
