The Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) hosted a series of orientation sessions for over 400 new undergraduate and postgraduate students on 14th and 15th August, 2019 to help them adjust to life at UM.

Professor Victoria HARRISON

At the UG orientation, Professor Victoria Harrison, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, led the session “First lecture at FAH” for the young and excited undergraduate students joining the University of Macau this year. She opened the session  by explaining the meaning of “Humanities”, describing it as “the study of how people process and document the human experience”. She went on to speak on the importance of fostering student’s 4Cs, namely critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration. Professor Harrison also highlighted some differences between high school and university, stressing that students need to adopt a series of learning strategies to make a smooth and successful transition to university.

Professor Victoria Lei, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, introduced relevant rules and regulations, giving some practical advice. Professor Joaquim Kuong, Assistant Dean for Faculty Promotion & Events Planning, gave a sharing session about potential career paths for humanities graduates.

After the first lecture, various departments and programmes conducted briefing sessions to prepare students for the new academic year at UM.

PhD and MA orientation

At the PhD and MA orientation sessions, Professor Harrison encouraged students to make full use of all learning opportunities, participate actively, work with their advisors closely and learn from great people from various disciplines in the faculty.

Following her welcome speech, Professor Harrison also introduced relevant rules for the PhD and MA programmes and schedules for completion of degrees. Current postgraduate supervisors and student association representatives also attended the event and shared their experience.
