The Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) hosted an orientation event on 14th August to welcome over 260 new undergraduate students, marking the beginning of their new chapter at the University of Macau (UM).
The event, designed to foster a sense of community and intellectual curiosity, featured an inspiring address by Prof. Zhang Jian, Associate Dean of FAH. In his welcoming speech, “Dean’s First Lecture”, Prof. Zhang extended a warm greeting to the new students and referenced Chinese and Western classics to explain the content, significance, and goals of humanities education.
Following this, Prof. Lei Lai Cheng Victoria, Assistant Dean of FAH, provided practical guidance on adapting to university life. She covered important topics such as classroom conduct, academic warnings and support systems, guidelines for using GenAI tools, etc., and stressed the importance of discipline and accountability.
After the Dean’s First Lecture, representatives from the FAH Student Association introduced their organization and upcoming events. The orientation concluded with major-specific sessions led by faculty members who provided detailed information on study plans for their four-year programmes, graduation requirements, attendance policies, and more. During these sessions, the new students also had the opportunity to meet some professors in their programmes before classes began.
The orientation successfully enhanced new students’ understanding of the faculty and its programmes, helping them prepare for university life.
