Aims
The Master of Design in Industrial Design trains students to become professional designers adept at solving real-world problems through rigorous design practice and professional practicum. Emphasizing the mastery of design, the programme enables students to address emerging design challenges, fostering technological, cultural, economic, and social transformation, particularly within Macao and the GBA.
This programme prepares graduates to engage in high-level, research-informed design practices that delivers original and tangible solutions to genuine challenges. They will be proficient in disseminating their expertise across diverse sectors—from academia and industry to the wider community—while consistently adhering to rigorous academic and ethical standards.
The programme aims to:
- Meet Macao and the GBA’s objectives in cultural and innovative industries by:
1.1 Supporting Macao’s “1+4” appropriate economic diversification strategy for future industries.
1.2 Producing highly skilled, industry-ready industrial designers capable of applying advanced design methods and technologies to solve the region’s complex, real-world design challenges from the region and beyond. - Achieve the objectives of the University and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities by:
2.1 Cultivating citizens with innovative abilities and a mastery of practice in Industrial Design through student-centered education.
2.2 Preparing the next generation of creative practitioners through high-quality interdisciplinary design practice and practicum for professional careers or further academic pursuits. - Equip graduates for impactful professional roles in the industrial design industry through comprehensive mastery of design theories, advanced professional skills and technologies, interdisciplinary capacities, and project management experience.
Programme Intended Learning Outcomes
Graduates are expected to become professional designers who will shape the future of design practice and business or individuals who will continue to doctoral study.
Upon completion of the programme, students will be able to:
- Produce effective design solutions addressing real-world problems from Macao and the Greater Bay Area to advance its future industries in innovation, big-health, new technology, conventions, exhibitions and sports.
- Demonstrate practical design abilities and social responsibilities with internationally recognized tangible design outcomes.
- Demonstrate capacities and skills for interdisciplinary and international design collaboration.
- Excel in using cutting-edge and relevant tools and technologies for design ideation, development and production.
- Demonstrate professional knowledge, industrial experience, proficient skills and attitudes required for design practitioners.

Grounded in the philosophy that interdisciplinary design practice can drive integrative innovation and transform societies, it emphasizes integrating collaborative and transdisciplinary design approaches, emerging new technology, real-world problems, and industry practicum that result in tangible design outcomes. The programme also provides a strong foundation for graduates seeking academic instructor positions or pursuing further doctoral studies.
Entry Requirements
The Master of Design in Industrial Design programme follows the general admission rules and requirements of the University with the following additional requirements and application materials:
- Applicants must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Arts, Design, Engineering or related fields. At the same time, transdisciplinary applicants from areas such as psychology, computer science, mechanical engineering, or business are encouraged to apply, as they bring valuable diversity of perspective to the programme. The programme welcomes professionals who demonstrate research potential, creative ability, and a strong motivation to advance design innovation.
- Follow the general language requirements of the University, we also accept applicants’ submission of English scores from Mainland China’s Graduate Entrance Examination or CET-4, and have them assessed by the academic unit.
- CV is necessary for all applicants, detailing awards, exhibitions, design projects, patents, and publication records (if any) in Chinese, English, or both.
- A few writing samples in Chinese, English, or both, such as bachelor’s thesis.
- A design portfolio which should contain 10 to 20 images of the applicant’s work. All submitted portfolio will be counted as portfolio sheets as long as the work is considered representative of your individual abilities.

Graduation Requirements
Students are required to pass the required courses and several assessments to graduate. These include the Graduate Project Proposal Assessment (which evaluates innovative industrial design works, a graduation show, or an equivalent creative project showcasing new design discoveries), a written Project Report, and the Project Report Presentation. The Project Proposal Assessment and Presentation is typically conducted in Year 2.
