The University of Macau (UM) Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) recently organised a four-week Summer English Immersion Programme 2019 for incoming first-year students. The programme consists of morning formal classroom learning, and afternoon/evening immersion-style learning. Participating students exchanged ideas with programme assistants from around the world and experienced living in the residential colleges. The programme aimed to help students adapt to UM which uses English as the medium of instruction. Participating students said the programme significantly increased their confidence in speaking English and improved their listening and speaking skills.
The summer programme included a series of intensive courses with interactive learning activities, including games designed to encourage students to communicate with each other in English. In addition, a weekly presentation class provided a platform for students to build their confidence in public speaking. After class, students joined a variety of extracurricular classes, including drama, sports, singing, etc, to integrate English learning into their daily lives.
This year, 43 programme assistants from Ireland, Macao, Mainland China, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, United States and with rich experience in teaching English, were invited to assist in the programme. Programme Assistant and students were arranged to stay in UM’s residential colleges for more after-class interaction and cultural exchanges.
The closing ceremony of this programme was held on Friday, 26 July from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm in the University Hall. Students showcased their new-found English confidence and performed various English-speaking activities such as public speaking, comedy, presentation, and singing at the closing. Students were having a lot of fun when performing on stage. The programme was concluded with lots of love and found memories.
