The second session of the Bentobox Lecture Series for the 2020-2021 academic year was held last Wednesday, the 25th of November. The session was conducted online and offline simultaneously and was able to attract highly engaged participants who took part in a dynamic Q&A session, following the presentations by Mr. José Pascoal from Department of Portuguese and Prof. Catherine Chan from Department of History.
Mr. Pascoal’s presentation entitled “Is my B2 your B2? Is my B2 in Chinese your B2 in English?” began by introducing several international certificates of foreign language proficiency for both academic and general purposes, such as CEFR, ALTE, EALTA, CoE, HSK, among others. In addition to showing the assessment procedures and evaluation criteria of each exam, Mr. Pascoal also reflected on the challenges of preparing for those exams. Particular focus was put on (learning-oriented) assessment for Portuguese, namely on the 20 year-old CAPLE-ULisboa examinations and the INEP CELPE-Bras. The talk also guided participants through other assessment tools for Portuguese.
Professor Chan’s presentation is entitled “Greyhounds that Ran the World: Dog racing in 1930s Macau.” In her talk, Prof. Chan explored Macau’s global connections and its place as a tourist city of gambling and recreation by focusing her attention on Macau’s first dog-racing club that was established in the 1930s. In her fascinating historical account of the Macau Greyhound Racing Club, Prof. Chan explored the complex movements of people, animals, equipment, and capital that tells a larger story about Macau’s transnational connections.
The third and also the last Bentobox event for this academic year will be held on the 16th of December and will feature talks from Prof. Nevia Dolcini (Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies) and Dr. Raquel Abi-Sâmara (Department of Portuguese).
We are looking forward to seeing you there!
