The 3rd session of the Philosophy Café was successfully held at Café Rose Garden (UM Library, North Wing) on November 15, 2023. With participants coming from different academic fields such as history, psychology, and business administration, the event was attended by a diverse group of undergraduate students. The question “Why Do We Need Philosophy?” led to a lively and thought-provoking discussion.
Students discussed the importance of philosophy in our lives and the ways in which we can use it to help us understand our world and the people in it. The conversation ranged over the questions and concerns of various branches of philosophy, such as metaphilosophy, ethics, and epistemology. Questions pondered by participants included, ‘What is philosophy?’, ‘Is everything perspectival?’, and ‘Is there progress in philosophy?’
Students voiced their own opinions and perspectives, some sharing that philosophy has helped them with their personal existential needs. Others shared their experiences in the academic field of philosophy. Through the conversation, participants not only gained a better understanding of the subject but also considered their personal commitments. The atmosphere, combined with the tranquil ambiance of the café, was one of openness and intellectual curiosity.
This session of the Philosophy Café was an intellectually enriching and enjoyable experience for all involved. The event promoted understanding of why all of us need philosophy, and of the many ways in which philosophy can help us make sense of our lives and our world.
