Workshop proposed by UM FAH scholar receives grant from Harvard-Yenching Institute

A workshop proposed by a UM scholar has received a grant from Harvard-Yenching Institute

An international workshop titled ‘The (Un)Making of China: A Frontier Approach’, jointly proposed by Associate Professor Yang Bin from the Department of History, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Macau (UM), and Dr Sittithep Eaksittipong from the Department of History at Chiang Mai University, received a grant from the Harvard-Yenching Institute.

The proposed workshop aims to discuss the conceptualisation of ‘China’ from the perspective of frontier. An interdisciplinary approach will be adopted to analyse the transformation of China over the course of more than 2,000 years.

13 scholars from China, Thailand, the United States, Japan, and South Korea will attend the seminar to share their research findings on the subject. In their papers, these scholars will explore the concept of ‘China’ and its transformation from the perspectives of history (including the history of medicine and art), anthropology (including the study of Chinese diaspora), language and translation, and Buddhism. The workshop will be held at Chiang Mai University in early January of 2020. Chiang Mai University’s Department of History will provide accommodation and support in other areas.
