2020 ELC English Festival Presents – Documentary Screening: My Year of Living Mindfully

In the 2020 English Festival “Tending to Your Mind”, the English Language Centre (ELC) of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH), University of Macau (UM), held a documentary screening event on November 18, 2020. The documentary “My Year of Living Mindfully”, produced by Shannon and Julian Harvey, recorded Shannon’s self-experiment of mindfulness. The purpose of this screening event was to raise the UM community’s awareness of mental well-being and self-care.

The screening event was divided into two sections. In the first section, the participants watched the documentary and followed Shannon’s journey of self-exploration. After the screening, some participants said they had a better understanding of themselves. Among the participants, an instructor from the Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS) commented that this documentary can help both UM staff and students get a clearer picture of mindfulness. The instructor emphasized that it was a good time for the ELC to host this screening, especially during the outbreak of COVID-19.

In the second section, interested participants took part in the post-screening discussion. They shared their perceptions of the documentary and talked about how they felt when they were alone with themselves. Through a Padlet open forum and group discussion, participants shared their thoughts of stress and emotion management.

The screening event was successfully held with full support from participants and assistants. This event also attracted the attention of the Communications Office which showed concern for the mental health of the UM community. The ELC will continue to launch various events and activities to project positive energy into the UM community.
