2020 ELC English Festival Presents: Poetry Writing Workshop – Write Out Loud

The English Language Centre (ELC) of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH), University of Macau (UM), holds the 2020 English Festival. This year, the theme is “Tending to Your Mind”, which aims to raise the UM community’s awareness of mental health.

The “Poetry Writing Workshop – Write Out Loud”, the debut event of the English Festival, was successfully held on November 11, 2020. Ms. Carmen Lei, the guest speaker from Sacred Heart Canossian College (English Section), shared a lot of inspiring poems and stories in the workshop. She talked about the importance and the value of poetry. She said “poetry is all around us” and we can discover meaning in life, explore our own understanding, embrace differences, create meaningful experiences, and enhance the ability to comprehend languages by means of poetry.

In the practice session, Ms. Lei encouraged both teachers and students to let their creativity go and let their emotions go. The participants gained hands-on experience in creative poetry writing via the practice of acrostic poems, limericks, and diamante. Through writing out loud, they were inspired to express their emotional states and share their thoughts on life experiences.

The workshop received positive feedback from the participants. The ELC will continue to bring in positive energy and organize different events and activities for the UM community. Thank you for your participation and support!
