Programme Coordinator – MA in Translation Studies (English – Chinese)
Introduction
Hari Venkatesan joined the University of Macau in 2005 and holds an associate professorship. He also holds a permanent lectureship in Chinese from the University Grants Commission, India. Hari has worked as a professional translator/interpreter for over twenty years. He teaches translation for the media, translation of business/legal texts, consecutive and simultaneous interpreting at the undergraduate level and translation theory, interpreting and Computer Aided Translation at the graduate level.
Education
Hari completed his Ph.D. at the National University of Singapore. He completed his undergraduate (B.A. Hons.) and postgraduate (M.A.) at the Centre for Chinese and Southeast Asian Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, and obtained an Advanced Diploma in Chinese from Beijing Language & Culture University.
Research Interests
Hari’s main research interests lie in translation pedagogy and Computer Aided Translation. His past research project involved designing a web-based platform to support collaborative learning of translation while at present he is working on a pedagogy that integrates currently available technology in the training translators of the information age. He has supervised graduate theses both on translation studies and interpreting. Key themes include Simultaneous Interpreter training, functionalist analyses of translations, comparisons of pre/post editing in Machine Translation and evaluation of MT and Translation Memory systems.
