In October 2024, Department of Arts and Design of University of Macau successfully organised a series of three lectures, and on the 15th, Head of Department of Arts and Design, Professor Li Jun, together with Professor Ma Lu, Professor Liu Qinghe, and Professor Chen Shuxia, organised a Teacher-Student Seminar. The first lecture was held on 7th October, and Professor Yang Yang from Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University was invited as a UM short-term visiting scholar to give a lecture entitled ‘The Modern Application of Paper Cutting’. In the lecture, Professor Yang introduced one of the traditional Chinese art forms, paper-cutting, and analysed its history, types, functions and artistic characteristics. She cited paper-cutting art styles from various regions and combined them with modern paper-cutting art applications to illustrate the important functions and roles of paper-cutting art in contemporary society. In addition, she shared her own experiences in field research and practical creation, which Professor Yang regarded as an important node in the promotion of the art of paper-cutting. She has successfully combined the art of paper-cutting with social practice and hopes to promote the development of art and culture economy in the form of industries such as paper-cutting art workshops and paper-cutting art and culture parks.

On 14th October, Professor Chen Shuxia from the School of Art Management and Education of the Central Academy of Fine Arts was invited as a UM short-term visiting scholar to deliver a lecture on the theme of ‘Suspended Western Paintings’. Firstly, Professor Chen commented on the connection between Western painting and Chinese painting. In her opinion, Western painting is not an art form completely separated from Chinese painting. While maintaining its own characteristics, it can also be combined with elements of Chinese painting to form a new artistic expression. Western painting is not completely ‘non-Western’, but to a certain extent open and inclusive, able to absorb and integrate different cultural elements, including elements and styles of Chinese painting. Later, in order to explain the concept of ‘Western painting is not Western’, Professor Chen divided her own creative process into six parts, namely ‘Primary Colours, Space of Confidence, Virtual and Real, Within a Landscape, Forget the Form, and Margin’. The lecture will show the different stages of her art works to explain the changes in her artistic concepts.
