Professor Yuxin Wu from Xi’an International Studies University was invited to deliver a lecture entitled “Challenges and strategies in using honorifics for Japanese language learners” at the Department of Japanese, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Macau on 24 April, 2024. All the academic staff and near 100 students from the Department of Japanese attended the lecture.

The lecture began by introducing the types of errors in using Japanese honorifics from the perspectives of grammar and pragmatics, providing detailed examples as evidence. Subsequently, Professor Wu analyzed the issues faced by Japanese learners from the perspective of the Politeness Theory. Based on this analysis, several strategies and recommendations for learning honorifics were proposed. In the final stage of the lecture, Professor Wu addressed specific questions raised by teachers and students regarding the learning and use of Japanese honorifics.
