Title: Back to the Family — from a philosophical perspective
Abstract:When talking about 家jia (family/home), Chinese people often have a special cordial feeling, but they have also criticized fiercely the culture of jia since the May 4th New Culture Movement. In modern Chinese philosophy, on the one hand, there is not enough space to examine the issue of jia positively. On the other hand, there is an obvious “deficiency” in the western modern “individual-subjective” philosophy. That is the reason why we see a lot of discussions of the “Other” in contemporary western philosophy. The philosophy of the “Other” still has its shortcomings. The traditional Chinese idea of 親親 qinqin (relations) may provide some solutions to the problem. In other words, this philosophy of 歸家 guijia (homecoming) may open some new possibilities in building a “warmer” life-world in the future.
