Abstract: Posthumously regarded as a peculiar pioneer of modern Portuguese poetry, Cesário Verde (1855-1886) started sketching Lisbonian scenery in the latter half of the 19th century. Those urban poems intersected with Verde’s inner landscape got him an ironic name as a Portuguese Baudelaire. This talk will guide the audience to revisit the Lisbonian sites in poems like “Num Bairro Moderno” and “O Sentimento dum Occidental.” Conjoining historical background of the urbanization and sanitation of Lisbon, we will see Verde’s transformation of memory and reality, the modernity of his poetic language that is both objective and visionary, and the underlying associations between the memories of the poet and of the city.

Speaker: Dr. Zhou Xingyue, Assistant Professor of Sun Yat-sen University, researcher of modern poetry in English and Portuguese.
