To all students enrolled in English Department courses:

Have you written an essay of which you are especially proud? Perhaps an essay written on a topic that particularly interested you and that you worked very hard to develop? The UM Department of English would like to acknowledge that achievement by again recognising the Best English Studies essays this coming Prize Day.

The Best English Studies Essay prizes recognise excellence in the work you are doing every day in linguistics and literary studies. Creative writing should not be submitted. The essay you submit should be an academic essay you have written in response to a regular assignment in one of the English Department’s courses in these areas this academic year. The competition is open to students enrolled in English Department courses at any undergraduate level and to essays of any length. Prizes will be awarded for each of the four years of the program, though the organisers reserve the right not to award a prize if essays are not of sufficiently high standard. Only one submission per student, please.

If you are interested in submitting an essay, please send an e-mail with the subject line ‘Submission for Best English Studies Essay Competition’ to Damian Shaw at dshaw@um.edu.mo and attach your essay to the message as a Microsoft Word document only. Other formats will not be accepted. Please give your name, student number, and year of study (year 1/2/3/4) on the first page of the essay. The deadline for submission is 12:00 noon Thursday, 14 April 2022.
