Portuguese Language in the World
The Portuguese language has a very rich cultural history and tradition. Its origins are European (in the North West of the Iberian Peninsula from the 11th and 12th centuries). In the 15th and 16th centuries, during and after the period of the World Maritime Discoveries, it spread worldwide. Today the Portuguese language is the fifth most widely spoken language in the world, with approximately 210 million first-language speakers and it is also becoming an international language.
Nowadays it is the official language of eight countries: Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Angola, São Tomé and Príncipe, Mozambique and East Timor, as well as the second official language of the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China and the third official language of Equatorial Guinea. Portuguese is also the official language of the Community of the Portuguese Language Speaking Countries (CPLP), one of the official languages of the European Union, as well as Mercosul (Southern Common Market) and the African Union.
