On the evening of May 28th, the Confucius Institute of the University of Macau (CIUM) organized the commencement of the 2nd semester, academic year 2020/2021 at E31 Student Activity Centre. Professor Victoria Harrison, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Professor Zhang Meifang, Master of the Cheong Kun Lun College, Professor Chen Zhong, Deputy Director of the CIUM, and all fellow teachers and students attended the commencement.

At the beginning of the commencement, Professor Chen gave an opening remark to express his sincere welcome and gratitude to all attendees. He mentioned that he is thrilled to witness so many more students came to learn Chinese, and look forward to having more students to learn Chinese language and culture in the future. After the speech, Professor Chen presented the certificates and souvenirs to all the teaching assistants, and Professor Harrison and Professor Zhang presented 38 “Perfect Attendance” and 25 “Best Student” awards to students.

Following the presentation of awards, the students put together a series of great performances to the audiences, including singing Mando-pop songs, poem recitals, dance medley and short skit performance. At the end of the commencement, all attendees voted their most favourite performance, and the dance medley and short skit performance won the “Best Performance” award.

The CIUM currently offers five different levels of Mandarin courses including, Elementary Mandarin I, Elementary Mandarin II, Intermediate Mandarin I, Intermediate Mandarin II and Pre-advanced Mandarin. Since 2018, more than 500 students have successfully completed the Mandarin courses, and there are a record high number of students (130 students) completed the courses this semester.
