On May 13th, the Confucius Institute of the University Macau (CIUM) organized a graduation ceremony for the 2nd Semester of Academic Year 2021/2022 Mandarin courses at the E31 Student Activity Centre. Professor Janny M.Y. Leung, College Master of Choi Kai Yau College, Dr. Qi Yaning, Associate Master of Choi Kai Yau College, and Professor Chen Zhong, Deputy Director of UM Confucius Institute, and more than 160 students and teachers attended the Ceremony.
At the beginning of the Ceremony, Professor Chen gave an opening remark to express his sincere welcome and gratitude to all attendees. Then he expressed his gratitude to the teaching assistants for their hard work this semester, and wished all students a happy summer break, and hoped to see them again next semester.
Students of the CIUM prepared a number of performances for the Ceremony. They practiced outside of class time and rehearsed for many times to put together a great show for the audiences, not only to compete for the “Best Performance Award”, but to also demonstrate what they have learned at the CIUM. Aside from singing, dancing and poem recital performances, the audiences were very much impressed by the skit performance named “Black Heart Clinic” led by Teacher Cong together with Dai Ruiqi, Xi Xie Yu Gao and Jiang Xinglong. In the fierce competition of nine wonderful performances, the skit performance named “Naming the Dish” performed by Zhao Weixing, Wang Kailin, Tian Hanyu and Ming Xuanrui from the Intermediate Mandarin Course I won the “Best Performance Award”. They acted out the dish ordering scene in a Chinese restaurant with Chinese “Kuai Ban”.
There are a total of 140 students successfully completed the Mandarin courses, and among 28 of them were awarded the “Perfect Attendance Award”, and 34 were awarded the “Best Student Award”. During the presentation of awards, students got to express their determination to learn Chinese by hitting the drum on stage.
Finally, Pan Lirui from the Elementary Mandarin Course Ⅱ and Gu Run from the Intermediate Mandarin Course I were the representatives of students who shared their experiences of learning Chinese and expressed their sincere gratitude to Ms. Xue and all teaching assistants. The students also prepared a surprise to Teacher Chen who will be leaving the Confucius Institute, and expressed their gratitude to him through a pre-recorded video.
This year, the Confucius Institute of the University of Macau has provided Chinese language courses for students of different levels, including Elementary I and II, Intermediate I and II, and Pre-advanced Mandarin courses. In addition to teaching Chinese language knowledge through the Mandarin courses, the Confucius Institute also organize thematic activities in conjunction with different traditional festivals, leading students to learn about traditional Chinese culture from different perspectives and helping more expatriates to understand the beauty of Chinese language and culture.
