The Chinese-Portuguese Bilingual Teaching and Training Centre of the Department of Portuguese, Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Macau (UM), is holding an exhibition to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Henrique de Senna Fernandes, a renowned Macanese writer. The exhibition, which started on 16 October and will continue until 18 December, showcases the writer’s literary works and mementos. Those who are interested are welcome to visit the exhibition.
Born on 15 October 1923, Henrique de Senna Fernandes was a renowned lawyer and writer in Macao. He created a number of novels and short stories, including A Trança Feiticeira (The Bewitching Braid) and Amor e Dedinhos de Pé (Love and Tiny Toes), both of which were adapted into films with the same titles. His works primarily depict Macao in the 20th century and vividly portray the city’s history, customs, and landscapes. He made outstanding contributions to the development of literature and culture in Macao, and is regarded by many literary critics as a guardian of Macao’s heritage. The writer was awarded the Medal of Merit – Culture by the Macao SAR in 2001 and received a Doctor of Letters honoris causa from UM in 2008. He passed away on 4 October 2010.
The exhibition showcases Henrique de Senna Fernandes’s life, including his professional career and literary works, as well as thematic introductions. It also features portraits of him taken by author Yao Feng. In addition, there is an online quiz contest for visitors to win vouchers. The Chinese-Portuguese Bilingual Teaching and Training Centre hopes that the exhibition will enable more people to know more about Henrique de Senna Fernandes and his literary works, which in turn can arouse their interest in Macao writers and Macao literature.
