Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) held the “Workshop on Excellent Teaching Practices” on Dec 7th, 2021, featuring Professor Jeremy DE CHAVEZ, the winner of 2020/2021 UM Teaching Excellence Award and the 2020 FAH Best Teacher Award. Jeremy De Chavez, Assistant Professor of the Department of English, shared with the audience his unique teaching stories and provided practical guidance in the organization of a teaching portfolio.

Associate Dean of FAH, Professor Wang Qingjie, delivered a welcome speech at the workshop, which was chaired by Professor Joaquim Kuong, Assistant Dean of FAH. Professor De Chavez reiterated that “stories are powerful and instrumental in learning” and that “stories help us understand and also cultivate wonder.” Taking his GE course “Sex and the Arts” and classical music pieces by J. S. Bach as examples, he shared fascinating stories with the audience and gave the participants some useful tips in preparing a teaching portfolio.

In the Q&A session, the participants were enthusiastic in exchanging teaching stories and thoughts with the speaker. The workshop, filled with Prof De Chavez’s humor and passion, was concluded in an upbeat atmosphere of academic exchange.
