The musical theatre in Brazil

Brazilian theatre is as ambiguous as its own audience history and culture. However during many years, popular theatre was considered inferior when compared to European art forms. Despite that, in the end of the 19^th century, popular theatre left the streets and moved to theatre houses. This fact changed the way the plays were produced, leading to new forms of writing​, acting and stageset building, which led to the emergence of modern Brazilian theatre in the 1940’s. Based on the most influential Brazilian play texts, this lecture intends to present and analyze the history of Brazil’s musical theatre.

SHORT BIO

Professor Larissa Catalão is a Professor of drama, history and theory of theater at the Department of Performing Arts, Unicamp Arts Institute (SP), since March 2009. She has a postdoctoral degree from Sorbonne Nouvelle University (Paris 3) (2016) and Campinas State University – Unicamp (2008-09); She holds a PhD in Literary Theory and History from the State University of Campinas – Unicamp (2006), in the area of Brazilian Literature and a masters degree in Theory and Literary History from the State University of Campinas – Unicamp (2002), in the area of Literature and other cultural productions (Theater). She has vast experience in Theater, focusing on Drama, History and History of Theater, Dramatic Literature, Brazilian Culture and Portuguese Language, acting on the following subjects: drama, history of Brazilian theater, theory of theater, Brazilian literature and Brazilian culture.
