ABSTRACT:

The musical theatre in Brazil

Brazilian theatre is as ambiguous as its own audience history and culture. However during many years, popular theatre was considered inferior when compared to European art forms. Despite that, in the end of the 19th century, popular theatre left the streets and moved to theatre houses. This fact changed the way the plays were produced, leading to new forms of writing, acting and stageset building, which led to the emergence of modern Brazilian theatre in the 1940’s. Based on the most influential Brazilian play texts, this lecture intends to present and analyze the history of Brazil’s musical theatre.
