A focus on English Studies

Under the English major of Bachelor in Languages, Literatures and Cultures, subjects are practically all taught in English, with a couple of exceptions, which can be checked under the Major in English tab.

Language Requirements

Please note that a large majority of the subjects at FLUP are taught ONLY in Portuguese, so applicants are required to have some preparation in the language before arrival (please see below under Portuguese language preparation). Students should carefully analyse the study plans and take note of the language of instruction as specified on each subject syllabus under “Teaching Language”. A number of subjects are taught in English, most notably in language-related degrees (Languages, Literature and Culture, Languages and International Relations, etc.). There are also a number of subjects taught in French, Spanish and German (check the subject record).

Non-speakers of Portuguese may also select subjects specified as “Suitable for English-speaking students”: this means that English may be used for assessment purposes (writing papers, taking exams, etc.) and lecturers provide tutorials in English, whenever possible. Please note that this does not mean that the subject is taught in English.

Subjects indicated as taught only in Portuguese are not open to non-speakers of Portuguese or Spanish (i.e., do not explicitly include the reference “Suitable for English-speaking students”).

Compulsory Language Certificates

  • Non-native speakers of Portuguese: Language certificate (DIPLE or equivalent) or certified level of Portuguese B2 level (CEFR), e.g., part of student’s studies, as shown on a transcript of records, home university certificate, etc.
  • English B2 certification: Students who are not studying or do not speak Portuguese must submit a language certificate with their application form, attesting to knowledge of English at B2 level or higher (home university certification, TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge, etc.).
  • Portuguese language preparation: Non-Portuguese speaking applicants are required to submit proof of attendance of a Portuguese A1 language course with their application form (i.e., proof of attendance or conclusion of one of these courses).

For details, please refer to the Information for Incoming Students.

English Requirement

English B2 certification: Students who are not studying or do not speak Portuguese must submit a language certificate with their application form, attesting to knowledge of English at B2 level or higher (home university certification, TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge, etc.).
