FAH-DPORT-CIELA: ‘Poems for Macau’ – Talking to Cecília Jorge
FAH-DPORT-CIELA: ‘Poems for Macau’ – Talking to Cecília Jorge
The Research Centre for Luso-Asian Studies (CIELA) is pleased to announce its upcoming event – a talk given by Dr. Cecília Jorge on her most recent publication, a book of poems entitled ‘Poemas para Macau’ (Poems for Macau). During this session held at the Faculty of Arts (University of Macau) and simultaneously online, the author will share with the audience the guiding lines and themes behind her poems that reflect memories of Macau of bygone and current times. Are such memories and thoughts merely her own views and feelings, or do they overlap with those of the Macanese community as a whole? What place does her recent poetic work hold within the literary production of Macau and of diasporic Portuguese […]

The May Fourth Movement in the American Media: A New Perspective of China’s Radical Era
The May Fourth Movement in the American Media: A New Perspective of China’s Radical Era
After the outbreak of the May Fourth Movement, the American media carried out continuous reports, providing a Western perspective on understanding the movement and important historical records of the US attitude towards the May Fourth Movement at that time. These reports not only revealed the process of this movement in detail but also, particularly important, they foresaw China ushering in a new era. As the American media and Americans in China clearly expressed their support for China on the Shandong issue, Japan began to spread rumors that the movement was directed by the United States behind the scenes, trying to transfer the responsibility for the anger of the Chinese people caused by its aggressive actions to the Americans. The root […]

The Spatial Distribution of Chinese Manufacturing Industry in 1933: and A Discussion on the Spatial Process of Late-Developing Countries’ Modernization 1933年中國製造業區域布局研究—兼論後發大國工業化的空間進程
A database based on A Survey Report of Chinese Industry by Liu Dajun and other statistics in 1930s has been constructed as the main source for this research. This database reveals that the geographic industrial distribution of China in 1933 demonstrated a trend “contiguous distribution in the east, scattered distribution in the west”. This trend was caused by the distinguishes of the eastern and western region in natural resources, transportation conditions and connections with external markets. Without support form a powerful state, the industrialization of modern China faced many obstacles, such as the shortage of market, spatial gap between the eastern region and the western region, vicious competition among different regions and the mismatch of natural resources and investment and […]

Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the University of Macau: FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series – “Coming to Terms with Zhū Xī’s Profoundly Influential Heritage: How [Well] did 19th and 20th Century Christian Intellectuals Engage Zhū Xī’s Corpus?” by Prof. Lauren F. Pfister, Hong Kong Baptist University
Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/92984147450 Abstract During his lifetime the Sòng dynasty Rú scholar, Zhū Xī 朱熹 (1130-1200), never encountered any person who was associated with Christian traditions. Nevertheless, the immense cultural and intellectual influences of his school of Principle-centered Learning (Lǐxué理學) became a dominant force in the development of Ruist (“Confucian”) traditions in later dynasties. During the Qīng empire (1645-1911) Zhū Xī’s interpretations of The Four Books (Sìshū 《四書》) – texts that he created in the 1170s in ways that were innovative and controversial – became the imperially authorized interpretive standards for Ruist education. With that unusual affirmation of the value of some of his extensive corpus, studies in Zhū Xī’s works became central to the development of Qīng imperial ideology […]
